Why 90% of small businesses fail in Nepal?

There’s a tendency in Nepal and a very bad one i must say i.e. whenever a person, anywhere in Nepal thinks of starting a business he or she thinks of Kathmandu. Either it’s an advertising agency, a SME or anything else all they think is starting it in Kathmandu and by starting Kathmandu i mean all they do is target the customer of that only city only.

I think this is the reason for their failure. I have nothing bad about that city but i guess focusing your whole business operation to one city is just pretty bad decision you take on start of your business venture. I do understand Kathmandu is a big city with 3 Million population but you need to look beyond that. Though sparsely spread, Nepal has a population of about 30 Million, if you start your operation from somewhere in the middle of country and focus at least 2 development region then you get a customer base of more than 3 Million.

Let me give you an example

Wlink Communication, the leading ISP of Nepal, though it started from Kathmandu initially but now it has franchises or branches in almost all the cities of Nepal. But what about other ISPs, hardly anyone expect Wlink has even a single subsidiary in any other city., Mercantile used to have in some places but now they don’t seem to be interested in providing Internet to end user.

Subisu, Vianet, etc. etc. Name any one ISP that has countrywide presence. None. You would rather find local ISPs operating in any give city. But not a single ISP expect Wlink which has cross country operation and that is the reason why Wlink earns so much whereas other ISPs have to fight for their survival.

Take my advice, if you are planning to start a SME in Nepal, then ditch Kathmandu. Open your HQ in places like Pokhara, Butwal, Birgunj or Biratnagar and target an entire belt of that region; you will be profitable from day one. There’s a huge market outside Kathmandu which is untapped in every single niche. All you need is to look beyond the Capital and you will find yourself in much better position.

Some Good things and a lot of Bad Things

Following is a post from user bikalpapaudel on Mazzako Forum.  I though it was a good review about our condition so i have posted it here.

You wont see anything concrete even for the next 7-8 years. But slight hints? You can get that all the time, provided you look for it.

I don’t see what’s gone so bad as compared to the last 5-6 years. I mean most of the changes we have seen, even the degratory ones; are more or less a consequence of the process we are in; in the context of a country like ours.

You might be thinking so because there’s been no stop in strikes, rallies from dissatisfied masses.
You might be pissed because of Loadshedding.
You might be pissed because of continued debates and pulling-each-other’s legs by politicians.

You might be frustrated looking at how the media goes on and on about politics – the problem, in part, is the media.
Too much highlight on politics and politicians — people pay too much attention to those issues — people get frustrated. To media, politics is masala. Media has corrupted many of us here – Indian news channel jastai hunchha bhanne darr chha malai!

There have been no real restrictions or blockades to the people, no disastrous happenings. All that’s happened are quite obvious during Transition phase for a diverse-people country like ours.

Good Things that have happened.
The things that have massively changed for the good in the past few years.

- Totally unaligned parties go into agreement: 12 bunde samajhdaari. Very phenomenal, even looking back.
- Jana-andolan
- Constituent Assembly election. A great achievement in itself.

- King being overthrown: let’s not go into the goods or the bads, but a change like that is phenomenal.
- The common man can voice out his/her dissatisfaction towards the authority. Unlike the past.

- The deprived masses being aware: a very big achievement again. Madhes aandolan, dalit and janajaatis, tharus, kirats.

- Maoist & Nepal army organization/re-allocation/integration process underway. Another indicator that things haven’t been completely damaged.

Even concerning other sectors, I do see development.
- We have a friggin ~10 national broadcast TV channels now!
- Look at the number of FM radios!
- Internet. The penetration is increasing and you can at least get online from all 75 districts! North Korea does not even have a single ISP. The condition is similar in Bhutan. And China – tyaako internet bhanda ta malai hamrai thik.
- Common man can still monetarily survive, if he works. It’s not like Zimbawe. Even poor people rarely die out of hunger — it’s not like India!

A very important thing to consider. DO NOT COMPARE OUR PACE WITH OTHERS. Sure we lag behind, but we have not gone back! [Let me remind you, countries do go back. Pakistan ma din dinai manchhe mariraako chha. Iraq dhwasta bho. Africa ma kati country ustai chha.]

We are just slower — it’s kind of obvious considering the political/constitutional mess we have been through in our past and are still sorting.

We should not expect a lot in this transitional phase. We should not expect an unnatural pace for things to get sorted.

As for loadshedding — that can be blamed on everyone who has had power the last 50 years. Tetro varsha samma overhead banai rakhnu pardaina? Demand ta badhi halchha ni.
Nepalma ta loadshedding jaile dekhi nai chha — kasko galti bhanne? Dosh dine nai ho bhane pani aajako shaasan bhanda pani pahile pahile ko shaasan lai chai baru dosh dina milchha hola.

Tara tyo ni nagarum, kasailai dosh nadium. Aile ko loadshedding hami sabai ko samasya ho. Hami sabai le afulai hune harm minimize garna aru alternatives khojnu parchha.

Sorry bikalpapaudel, didnt take your permission before posting it. I hope you wont mind it. :)

Getting the funding for any startup – its tough!!

For last couple of weeks i am looking to start my own company and get some websites done so that I can diversify my income source. Writing web content and designing website for others is a good work but you can never be satisfied by doing it only. As per starting my own company and doing the things of myself is considered, it gives a bunch of satisfaction. But still there is some huge problem with it and that’s about Funding. A startup requires some good amount of working capital to ensure things move on smoothly. Without any funding you won’t move even an inch.

Now, what should i do if i don’t have funding of my own? I think i should resort to banks, but wait they won’t give me any money unless i don’t show them that i am capable of returning it or hold any mortgage. Well, I don’t have any thing to place for my loan neither my business proposal will make it possible that they give me loan against it. Finally, there is only one way that i can get a loan and that’s getting some payday loan. There are many companies that provide payday loan easily on your future credit card and business receivables and as I am able to bring those quick sales i will surely apply for one. Let’s hope i get a god amount of business loan to star my company.

Being a Web worker in a Third world country

Last whole month was a transition for me, Lost the job (actually I left it) got high fever, Cheimaphobia and Huh!  Also a kind of Information Overload, actually my last 5 years have completely been passed on Internet, and these days reading more and more blogs always leads me to information overload, and that’s a very dangerous problem.

And these days I am having a new problem, (problems never leave me) , i left my job and started working online , not those online job which those mocking hi-tech company of new baneshwar called onlinejobnepal.com gives , No i dont work for them neither any other online  company in Nepal, i do a kind of freelancing , writing content and posting thread on new forums, and yeah i am making some decent money by this , i wont tell the exact figure but its more than  the Prime Minister of Nepal ( i am not boasting of it , ok ), Now the problem is that no one over here understand what i do ,i got amazed when i saw that even people who work in Internet didn’t understand what i do ,it really gets me hard to explain them what i do , Yes its a kind of new thing, but people dont believe me , i dont know what i have to show them so that they can believe what i do.

I hope I get this problem solved,

Terai is burning ! Anyone is listening

Terai is burning, and you may think what the hell these desis are doing. Are they planning to take Terai into India. For common people from hilly region or even people with Hilly accent living in Terai region, it must be amazing to see these madeshi buring buses and pubic property.
But my dear friend, this was inevitable, people of terai were suppressed for decades. and when there is suppression , a revolution is born. The autocratic king supressed nepalese so , Maoist were born and now when the Pahadis have been suppresing madhesis for decades, another revolution has been born. I am not supporting the way these madehis groups are figthing for there rights. But i would support there cause. They are fighting for something which was unknown to the world. They are fighting for there existence. Go and see in terai, how much those so called Hakims and Subba saabs of government offices treat a Madhsi. Go and see the District Administration Office in any terai district , how the CDO calls a Madheis an “Indian”. Just imagine, how it feels when someone tells you a traitor right on your face.

I dont support the violence, but in a democracy everyone has right to speak and self determeination does not mean separation

Hanging Hussein

This was the title i saw today morning on CNN and below it was the old face of Saddam Hussein. Sometimes i feel that what America is doing is good. They are always good. They are the powerful. I think they should now attack Iran and Syria too and hang Mahmood Ahmedijan too. But what i dont understand is till when will they keep fighthing for the name of War against Terror. American forces invaded Iraq in search of Weapons of Mass Distruction and till now they have no idea when and where are they going to find it. But i am sure one day again in name of WMD they will attack Iran and destroy it too.American Invasion in Iraq and Afghanistan was just not against Terrorism , it was a war against whole Islamic feternity of world. Every Muslim in world is suspected being a Terrorist. Moreover in West, muslims who had been living there for ages are now treated as aliens.
An Iraqi judge ordered Saddam to be hanged, and be hanged in just in 30 days. Whole world knows Saddam Hussein is just being made scapegoat. If Saddam is to be hanged for mass killing of 180 Shites in Dujail 2 decades ago then George Bush and Tony Blair should too be hanged because there forces have killed thousands in Iraq and Afghanistan. But no, they wont be hanged because there is a saying ” History turns to one who is powerfull ” and right now West is powerful then East. So they dictate the world as they say. But i am sure that day will come when there will be justice, some one will defy American Dream of ruling the world.

Dhoom – 2 !!! Bollywood’s answer to Hollywood

Cut the crap. Cut the gyan. Let’s come to the point straightway: Is Dhoom 2 as big as its hype? Does it meet the monumental expectations? Or is it a gas balloon with a leak?Yes, Dhoom 2 works big time and here’s why.

Very rarely do you come across Hindi films that marry form and content so beautifully. Dhoom 2 is cool, but beneath the sheen there’s substance too.

Mounted on an extravagant scale, the film is a visual delight. The film travels from one breath-taking locale to another in those 16 reels, often making your jaw drop to your knees thanks to the sweeping impact it makes.

For any sequel to score high marks, it ought to be embellished with pulse-pounding moments. Dhoom 2 is a hi-octane thriller and the thrills, stunts and pace–vital for any thriller to strike a chord–are sure to keep you on the edge from Scene A to Z.

Most importantly, Dhoom 2 delivers what it promises: Escapist cinema at its best!

Any hiccups? Not really, but the music could’ve been better. That’s about it!

So, what’s the verdict then? A film like Dhoom 2 raises the bar for Hindi films. If you’ve tasted the best, you would never settle for anything komsi-komsa stuff later, right? That’s the Dhoom 2 effect. For film-makers that tread a similar path, it’s going to be an added responsibility to go beyond Dhoom 2.

In terms of business, Dhoom 2 is bound to create dhoom at the ticket window. It’s a box-office triumph all the way. Time for Yash Raj to pop champagne yet again!

Ali’s (Uday Chopra) dream of becoming a police officer has come true. He is now ACP Jai Dixit’s (Abhishek Bachchan) right hand man. Together, they are trying to keep a tight leash on the crime in India. Little do they know what they are going to be up against.

Enter Aryan–Mr. A (Hrithik Roshan). A hi-tech international thief. After pulling off a series of impossible heists all over the world, his next target is Mumbai, India. The case is given to ACP Jai and Ali. Helping them put the pieces of the puzzle together is ACP Shonali Bose (Bipasha Basu), Jai’s college mate, now a police officer in her own right. For the last two years, Shonali has been tracking these amazing thefts and is now an expert on this thief, who no one has seen.

Once in Mumbai, Mr A finds his match in Sunehri (Aishwarya Rai), a petty yet clever thief. She makes him an offer he finds very hard to refuse. A partnership! Aryan accepts. And so the game begins, a game of cat and mouse, a game of good v/s bad.

The cops–Jai, Shonali and Ali–are after the robbers–Aryan and Sunehri. From the deserts of Namibia to the backwaters of Goa, the mean streets of Mumbai and the ancient forts of Rajasthan and finally to Rio, Brazil.

Dhoom 2 is modeled on the lines of the chor-police sagas that Hindi films specialized in the 1970s and 1980s. In essence, it’s not a path-breaking/inventive story, but what takes the film to dizzy heights is the sequence of events that unravel at a feverish pace. Right from the start of the film (Hrithik’s first heist in Namibia; the robbing of a crown from a moving train) to his next target (robbing a precious diamond from a museum in Mumbai) to the theft in Jamnagar (Hrithik and Ash come face to face for the first time), the film whets your appetite from the word ‘Go’.

If the first hour focuses on the cat-n-mouse game, the second hour changes tracks as it transforms into a love story. While the scenes between Uday and Bipasha (in a dual role) are cute, the ones between Hrithik and Ash build up slowly. The pace drops intermittently in this hour since the thrills are reserved for the penultimate reel, but a number of worthy sequences in this half conceal this tiny blemish.

Note the turning point in the tale–the revolver sequence between Hrithik and Ash and the lip-to-lip kiss that ensues; it’s an outstanding sequence from the writing, execution and performance point of view. The pre-climax–the robbery of man-made gold coins–as also the climax chase are breath-taking as well.

The end is distinctive and will have its share of advocates and adversaries. Yet, in all fairness, it’s one of the highpoints of the sequel. Any scope for the third installment? Oh yes, there is. Don’t be surprised if Abhishek and Uday embark on their third mission. As for the climax shot vis-a-vis John Abraham’s surprise appearance, it’s an unfounded rumour!

Dhoom 2 is director Sanjay Gadhvi’s finest effort so far. The execution of the subject is such, you just can’t help get transported to a world of make-believe. Gadhvi has handled a number of sequences with aplomb. The Hrithik-Ash sequence mentioned above is one of them. The dialogue between Hrithik and Abhishek–after they’ve known each other’s true identities–is another. The final scene of the enterprise (it would be unfair to reveal it here!) is yet another sequence that indicates that the director has done his homework well.

Pritam’s music is fair. Barring the Krazy Kiya Re track and the title track (filmed on Hrithik), the score is outright mediocre. However, the saving grace is the vibrant and energetic picturisation, which takes the songs to another level. The choreography of the title track by Shiamak Davar is outstanding. Vaibhavi Merchant’s choreography of Krazy Kiya Re is admirable as well. Salim-Sulaiman’s background score is highly effective.

Dhoom 2 is peppered with good looking visual effects (Tata Elxsi), besides a stylish décor/look. The action sequences as also the stunts (Allan Amin) do complete justice to the genre and the Indian audiences are bound to gasp with disbelief. Cinematography (Nirav Shah, Vikas Shivraman) is impeccable. The camerawork can easily match international standards. Dialogues (Vijay Krishna Acharya) are wonderful. Costumes (Anaita Shroff Adajania) are upmarket. In fact, the styling of Hrithik and Ash (the tanned look et al) deserves distinction marks.

Hrithik’s casting as the antagonist can be accurately called a masterstroke. He’s the actual star of Dhoom 2, the real scene stealer. In fact, you can’t imagine any other actor enacting the cool robber with such precision. If there’s anyone who’s bound to benefit the maximum from Dhoom 2, it’s Hrithik. No two opinions on that!

Abhishek in Dhoom 2 is what Shashi Kapoor was in Amitabh Bachchan starrers. Important yes, but relegated to the backseat. Abhishek does a fine job nonetheless. Only thing, he needs to take care of his appearance and posture when he’s pitted against someone with a personality like Hrithik.

Aishwarya evolves into a different person in Dhoom 2. Her tanned makeup, her styling, her performance, it’s a different Ash here. It’s a complete departure from what Ash has done in the past. Does it work? Of course, she is in form!

Bipasha is just about okay as the cop, but is lively as the twin sister. Uday irritates at times, but handles a few scenes well. His portions with Bipasha’s twin sister in Rio are sure to bring a smile on your face. Rimi Sen is hardly there.

On the whole, Dhoom 2 is a winner all the way. At the box-office, the film has already embarked on an earth-shattering initial and with multiple shows being conducted at multiplexes (16/18) with inflated ticket rates, the film will set new records in days to come. For Yash Raj, who’ve not only produced but also distributed the film, Dhoom 2 should emerge as one of the biggest hits of their career. Blockbuster!

Tommorow never comes !!!

I really dont understand why people try to push every work to tommorow. Its really disgusting and ridiculous habit of we humans. Anything whihc can be done today is never done today . Most probably we tend to just – I ‘ll do it tommorow. This sounds very bad to the other person who wants the work to be done today or has urgent need of doing work but no , who cares about others. We are talking about New nepal and each and every person tody talks about oh we are going to have a new nepal . Bull Shit – I guess when time comes we may even say . We will have a new nepal tommorow. Specially we nepalese have more habits of saying tommorow. Why the heck we dont do things today . When will this atitude of us will change ?
